Music in Beechlawn is exciting, creative and enjoyable. All pupils get the opportunity to take part in musical activities which enable them to explore feelings and express themselves in ways that support or go beyond verbal communication. Music is not only a subject which develops creativity; it also helps to build self-confidence, self-esteem and listening skills. These are all important elements in the overall development of the student. There are three main strands in the Music programme in the 'Northern Ireland Curriculum'. They are as follows: · Working creatively with sound · Singing and Performing with simple instruments · Listening and responding to their own and others' music-making In all Music lessons taught these three strands should be incorporated. As Music teachers we aim to make our lessons fun, interactive and interesting. Below is an outline of the type of work covered. 1. To make the study of Music an interesting and enjoyable experience for the pupils. 2. To encourage a disciplined approach to Music in the pupils and develop self-confidence. 3. To develop the variety of ways vocal and body sounds can be used to promote Music in the classroom. 4. To develop the musical experience of the pupils through themes, i.e. using B.B.C Music programmes. 5. To introduce and encourage learning of modern hymns and tunes etc. 6. To encourage the pupils to develop their musical abilities and explore music through their listening, composing and performing activities. | |

In our school Music is an integral part of the school calendar. Our school choir is led by Ms.C. Wilkinson and the accompanist Mrs. A. Mc Cullagh, who lead musical performances at assemblies, perform a carol service at Christmas and for the last few years have taken part in the annual 'Bangor Choral Festival', winning first place in the special schools division last year and bringing a cup back to the school. We are very proud of their achievements to date. There is also the possibility of a school band being created in the near future, so watch this space. Ms C Wilkinson
