Life Skills

Last year we established a 'Life Skills Suite' in order to reinforce the Mathematics, English and other Life Skills programmes being taught during class lessons.

The 'Life Skills Suite' consists of four rooms, a café, post office, medical room and a kitchen area with sand and water trays, each designed to allow pupils to practice and extend their skills in a real context..

Cafe Medical Room

Café  -
The Café is designed to allow pupils to use money in practical, every day situations and to explore ways of paying with exact money and receiving change.  The cafe provides opportunities to explore and appreciate the relationships between coins and notes, investigate ways of making different amounts of money and to discuss and assess the 'value for money' in relation to purchases.

Kitchen -
Pupils are encouraged to explore and develop mathematical skills in the kitchen area through practical exploration and investigation.

Pupils are given opportunities to experiment with weight, volume, capacity, and are taught how to use the associated language appropriately and within context.
Medical Room Post Office

Medical Room -
In the Medical Room, pupils are provided with opportunities to measure height, weight and record data, choose suitable equipment to measure with and to understand the need for standard units of measurement.  They are also taught to use measuring instruments accurately and to explore and understand the relationship between units of measurement.

Post Office -
In the Post Office, pupils have opportunities to give and receive money accurately, to buy a stamp and place it correctly on the envelope, to weigh a parcel and work out the correct cost of postage, to understand and use weight language appropriately and to accurately read and interpret the postage costs chart.
