In Beechlawn we have a well-equipped, modern Home Economics room. The course for Years 8, 9 and 10 is designed to give the pupils a basic understanding of food studies and family life. Pupils are assessed on their practical skills at regular intervals. This helps to motivate them and enables achievement of short term goals.
They use various pieces of equipment (kettles, toasters, food processors, microwaves, liquidisers, blenders, gas and electric cookers) to cook breakfast, lunch and snack meals. They are encouraged to practise their culinary skills at home! Our aim is to present a course which is both relevant and enjoyable. | |

Year 11study Hospitality & Catering as part of their occupational studies course. This programme is designed to offer pupils an insight into the career opportunities within Hospitality & Catering. It concentrates on food preparation and cooking with its main purpose to develop the pupils' interests in cooking which may lead them into NVQ Level2 Hospitality & Catering in an Institute of Further Education. The areas studied are: - hot & cold sandwiches; - soups; - meat & poultry dishes; and - vegetables.
The Year 12 course is designed to prepare our pupils for leaving school and cooking for themselves in their own homes. It teaches them how to make and serve various snacks and meals safely and hygienically. They are also given the opportunity to plan and prepare their own dishes. All pupils are encouraged to work as independently as possible.
