Environment & Society

A multi disciplined approach is taken in all aspects of Environment and Society.  We include opportunities for fieldwork, practical 'hands-on' outdoor activities and where possible, benefit from support by outside agencies.

Our location enables us to fully utilise Hillsborough Village and the Forest park whenever appropriate.
Within our own mature seven acre site there are nature trails, a stream and areas set aside for horticulture.

As an Eco-Schools Green Flag Award holder, pupils at Beechlawn are fully involved with recycling and caring for our grounds.

Each Spring we hold a 'School grounds Day'.  This is an extremely successful event where many outside agencies set up outdoor classrooms around the school for our pupils and those from visiting schools to enjoy.  The agencies involved vary from the Ulster Museum to the N.I. Fire Service and from the WWF to the P.S.N.I.

'Climate Week Challenge' Assembly.

A number of volunteers from the Eco-Schools committee at Beechlawn have recently held an assembly to high light what can be recycled in  our school.  We recycle paper, card, plastic bottles, aluminium foil and cans along with printer ink cartridges.  In the future we hope to add drinks cartons to our list.
Parents, staff and members of the wider community have given generous support to our 'Cash for Clobber' initiative helping us raise extra funds for school while at the same time sending textiles & footwear to people in the developing world.
Wish us luck in our up and coming Best Kept Schools competition entry!
